Answer engine optimisation works on the same principle, but the audience has shifted. When someone types a question into Perplexity, they are not browsing ten blue links — they are waiting for a synthesised answer, and Perplexity decides whose content gets woven into it. At Choco Media, we have spent the past year testing what earns citations in Perplexity specifically, and the answer engine optimization signals that move the needle there are distinct enough from Google SEO that they deserve their own playbook.
This post is for content teams, SEO leads, and marketing managers who want their brand’s thinking to show up inside AI-generated answers — not just in a ranked list beneath them. By the end you will have a concrete content structure, a TL;DR block format you can use immediately, and a clear picture of the citation signals Perplexity appears to weight most heavily.
We will focus on Perplexity throughout, though much of what follows applies to other answer engines. Perplexity is the clearest signal to optimise for because it exposes its citations visibly, which makes it possible to study what gets selected and why.
What answer-engine optimisation actually means
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring and formatting content so that AI systems — Perplexity, ChatGPT’s web search, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and others — can extract it, trust it, and attribute it in a generated answer. It is related to traditional SEO but the goal has shifted. With Google, you want the click. With an answer engine, you often want the citation — the inline reference that tells the user where the answer came from.
Citations matter for three reasons. First, they drive direct referral traffic from users who want to read more. Second, they signal authority to the model — content that gets cited tends to get cited again. Third, and perhaps most importantly for agencies, they are a visible brand signal in a context where most brands are invisible.
- AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It layers on top. Pages that rank well on Google tend to have the structural signals Perplexity looks for too.
- Citation does not equal traffic in the same way a click does. Users may read the answer without clicking through. But the brand impression is real.
- Perplexity’s retrieval is real-time. It crawls the live web, which means fresh content has a genuine advantage over evergreen pages that haven’t been touched in months.
The content structure Perplexity rewards
After analysing dozens of Perplexity responses across different query types, we have found that cited content consistently shares a few structural features. The most important is what we call the answer-first format: the direct response to the query appears in the first two to three sentences, before any context, caveats, or qualifications.
This mirrors how a confident expert answers a question in conversation. You state the answer, then explain it. Content that buries the answer in paragraph four — after two paragraphs of background and one paragraph of “it depends” — gets skipped. Perplexity’s model is looking for the clearest statement of the answer, and it will find it wherever it is on the page. Your job is to make sure it is at the top.
- Answer in sentence 1 or 2. State the direct answer before any qualifying context.
- Use explicit question-and-answer pairs. H2s phrased as questions (“What does Perplexity prioritise?”) followed by a direct answer are extracted more reliably than declarative headings.
- Keep paragraphs short. Three to four sentences per paragraph. Denser prose gets harder to extract cleanly.
- Use lists for multi-part answers. Perplexity’s synthesis handles bullet content well — it can pull a single bullet without needing the whole list, which increases the surface area for citation.
Heading structure
One H1 matching or closely paraphrasing the target query. H2s that each answer a sub-question a user might ask on the same topic. H3s for supporting detail. This is not new advice for SEO, but the reason it helps with answer engines is slightly different: the heading hierarchy gives the model a navigational map of what each section covers, making extraction more accurate and attribution more likely.
TL;DR blocks: the highest-leverage citation signal
The single biggest structural change we made to our content in 2025 was adding a TL;DR block to every post. The format is simple: four to six bullet points immediately after the opening section, summarising the key takeaways of the entire post. Ours look like this:

Why does this work? Answer engines are under latency constraints. They want to find a clean summary quickly. A well-structured TL;DR block is the easiest thing on the page to extract and cite. It signals that the page has a clear, synthesised point of view — which is exactly what an answer engine wants to surface to a user who is asking for a summary.

FAQ schema and how answer engines read it
FAQPage schema tells a machine exactly which questions a page answers and where the answers are. For answer engines, this is not just useful — it is close to a cheat code. Perplexity can index the structured data directly, which means it can cite your answer without needing to parse the prose at all.
Implementing FAQPage schema is not technically difficult, but there are a few rules that matter for answer engines specifically:
- Questions must match how users actually phrase queries. “What is answer engine optimisation?” is more useful than “Overview of AEO.”
- Answers in the schema must be self-contained. They should make sense without reading the surrounding page. If your schema answer says “as described above,” it will not extract cleanly.
- Limit to 5-8 Q&A pairs per page. More than that and the schema starts to look thin and auto-generated.
- Keep answers under 300 words each. Answer engines prefer concise, attributable statements over long explanations in schema.
Testing your schema
Use Google’s Rich Results Test and schema.org’s validator to confirm your markup is error-free before publishing. Then check Perplexity manually two to three days after publication by querying your target keyword and related questions. If your content is not appearing, the most common reasons are: the page was not yet crawled, the answer is buried too deep in the prose, or the schema answers are too vague to be confidently attributed.
Freshness: a signal most content teams underestimate
Perplexity retrieves content in real time. It is not ranking pages from a static index the way Google does — it is crawling the web at the moment of the query and synthesising from whatever it finds. That means freshness is a genuine ranking signal, not just a nice-to-have.
In client work we have found that pages updated in the past 90 days are cited significantly more often than pages with the same structural quality that haven’t been touched in over a year. The update does not need to be a full rewrite. Adding a new data point, updating a statistic, refreshing an example, or adding a paragraph that addresses a new angle is enough to signal that the page is current.
- Add a visible “last updated” date to every post. Perplexity reads this.
- Schedule quarterly reviews for your highest-priority pages.
- When an industry development makes your content even slightly outdated, update it within the week. That is a citation opportunity.
- Do not just change the publish date without changing the content. Perplexity’s crawlers are sophisticated enough to detect empty refreshes.
Authority signals: what Perplexity uses to decide who to trust
Perplexity does not publish a ranking factors document, so we are working from observed patterns. What we have seen consistently is that a few authority signals appear to matter more than others when two pages are structurally similar.
Domain authority, in the traditional SEO sense, still plays a role. Pages on sites with more external links pointing at them tend to get cited more often when quality is otherwise equal. But the gap is smaller than in Google SEO, because Perplexity weights structural signals heavily enough that a well-structured page on a newer domain can outperform a poorly structured page on a high-authority domain.
- Author attribution. Pages with a named author, an author bio, and links to the author’s other work get cited more than anonymous pages. Perplexity is trying to evaluate expertise, and authorship is a proxy.
- Specific data over vague claims. “Conversion rates improved by 34%” gets cited more than “conversion rates improved significantly.” Specificity signals confidence and verifiability.
- External citations in your own content. Linking out to credible sources within your post tells Perplexity that you are participating in the broader information ecosystem, not publishing in a vacuum.
- First-party experience signals. Phrases like “in our client work” or “we tested this across twelve accounts” signal that the content is based on direct experience, not synthesis from other sources.
The content types that get cited most reliably
Not all content formats earn citations at the same rate. Based on what we have tracked over the past year, certain formats are disproportionately likely to appear as Perplexity sources.
Definition posts — pages that answer “what is X” with clear, structured definitions — are the highest-citation format. They appear in enormous numbers of AI-generated answers because so many queries are definitional in nature. If you do not have a clear, well-structured definition page for your core concepts, that is your highest-priority AEO gap.
- Comparison posts (“X vs Y”) earn heavy citation in commercial queries. Structure them with a clear winner for each criterion, not a balanced both-sides answer for every dimension.
- Step-by-step guides with numbered lists are easy to extract. Perplexity can surface step 3 as a standalone citation without needing to pull the full post.
- Data-driven posts with original statistics or analysis. If you have first-party data that is not available elsewhere, Perplexity will cite you as the source.

A practical AEO content checklist
Before publishing any content you want to earn Perplexity citations, run it through these checks. This is the list we use internally before a post goes live on our own site or a client’s.
- Answer-first check. Does the first paragraph answer the primary query directly, without burying it in context?
- TL;DR block present. Is there a 4-6 bullet summary block after the intro?
- FAQ schema implemented. Are the top 5-8 questions answered in valid FAQPage schema, with self-contained answers?
- Freshness date visible. Is there a “last updated” date visible on the page?
- Author attribution. Is there a named author with a bio and links to other content?
- External citations. Does the post link to at least 2-3 credible external sources?
- Specific data. Are any claims supported by specific numbers rather than vague superlatives?
- Mobile rendering clean. Do the TL;DR blocks and FAQ sections render correctly on mobile? Perplexity crawls the mobile version.

What does not work (and wastes your time)
A few approaches that intuition suggests might help with answer engine optimisation do not appear to do much in practice.
Keyword stuffing the target phrase into every paragraph has no observed benefit. Answer engines are not counting keyword instances — they are evaluating whether the content actually answers the question. Similarly, thin FAQ pages with three-word answers to dozens of questions perform worse than focused pages with five to eight detailed, self-contained answers.
- Chasing citation volume over citation quality. Being cited in low-stakes queries does not build authority the way being cited in high-intent queries does. Focus on the queries your potential clients actually ask.
- Building links to AEO pages without updating the content. Structural signals matter more than domain authority alone. A page with 50 backlinks and weak structure will lose to a page with 5 backlinks and strong structure, all else equal.
- Treating AEO as a one-time project. It is an ongoing practice. The pages that earn citations consistently are the ones that are actively maintained — updated, expanded, and monitored.

Getting started: the first three things to do
If you are new to answer engine optimisation and want to move quickly, prioritise these three actions before anything else.
First, identify your five highest-traffic pages and audit them against the checklist above. Add TL;DR blocks, implement FAQ schema, and update any statistics that are more than twelve months old. This is the fastest path to improving citation rates on content that already has traction.
Second, write one definition post for your most important concept — the term that defines what your business does. Make it comprehensive, structured, and answer-first. This will be your most-cited page within six months if you maintain it.
Third, set a quarterly content refresh calendar. Mark every page that was last updated more than 90 days ago as a candidate for a light refresh — a new data point, an updated example, a paragraph addressing recent developments. Freshness is free if you build the habit.
